Baron Clemens von Mahnfeld is shot dead in his forest while hunting. At first, noblesse oblige seems to be the order of the day in this case. Nevertheless, Beissl and Jerry discover that the relationship between the deceased and his brother Reinhard was not the best, partly due to inheritance disputes.
Cousin Markus also comes under the investigators' scrutiny. He has been poaching in the castle forest for some time. When Jerry notices that the deceased's wife, Monika von Mahnfeld, may have been a victim of domestic violence, she becomes the prime suspect. But it is only when Jerry manages to gain the trust of Monika's young son that the detectives are able to look behind the facade of the castle and solve the case.
There is also a lot going on in Beissl's private life. Beissl's eldest daughter Maria wants to move out, and in the end it is Jerry who makes this happen, much to Beissl's chagrin.
